Mark Mills, UCD, 29th October 2014
Mark Mills, Wicklow based yacht designer came to talk to us and cover some of the basics of his design process. It was very interesting to see how something as hugely complex as a mini-maxi comes together, some of the topics discussed:
- How a brief for a boat is created
- The stages and process of design
- Incorporating weather/climate data
- Analysing anticipated racing angles.
- The tools for designing a boat 2d – 3d, models
- The different specialists involved in yacht design
- Advantages of different hull forms, why use chines.
- The structure and materials in modern boat construction, advantages disadvantages of materials
- Designing for different users (professional/amateur)
- The vital ratios in dinghy design
- Fashion and beauty in yacht design
- Contemporary versus Tradition
- The role of wood in contemporary construction methods
Mark also got down to the details of showing us how he uses his software and the parameters he keeps in mind when outlining a design and how they are weighted using a matrix. He shared with us one of his own dinghy design projects and how it responded both to its locality and the brief. It was clear that there were many similarities to the role of an architect in managing the construction of a building; being a design team leader who can manage specialists and communicate well with the client being vital skills. Also how intensive research on one project can lift the level of sophistication/ambition on the next project.
